Approach

Interesting and unique approach/procession to traditional buildings, often in jinja (Shinto shrine), can be seen in Japan. The indirect approach, sometimes in zigzag or diagonal directions, creates subtle surprise and understanding for the site.

Toshusai Sharaku, Edo period, active 1794-1795

28 pieces of woodblock prints by Sharaku were shown on NHK’s TV program “Sunday Museum”. The simplicity of lines, composition, colors and the depicted kabuki actors’ expression are so inspiring.

Model: Revisiting composition
